Reduced maintenance costs with durable solutions

Public Buildings

In 2016, Oslo municipality took action to address the high maintenance costs for sports facilities, where large portions of the budget went towards maintaining existing buildings rather than investing in new solutions.

The renovation of Stovnerhallen was chosen as a pilot project, with the goal of finding solutions that combine long service life and minimal maintenance. At the same time, the solutions needed to meet the functionality and safety requirements expected in a modern sports facility.

The result was a sustainable upgrade that effectively reduces maintenance costs and ensures safe use over time.

The Challenge: Need for complete renewal

Like many other sports facilities, Stovnerhallen suffered from surfaces exposed to heavy wear that required frequent maintenance. Lack of slip resistance and cleaning challenges made it necessary to upgrade both floors and walls to ensure safe and efficient use.

Additionally, the project required a solution that could handle demanding daily use, while the rehabilitation had to be completed within a tight timeframe without disrupting the hall’s activities.

The Solution: Durable materials and efficient installation

Based on our documented experience with similar projects and durable products, Acrylicon was chosen

  • Floors: Acrylicon Flake (819 m²), providing durable, slip-resistant and pore-free surfaces.
  • Walls: Acrylicon WallSystem Flake (568 m²), known for its durability and hygienic properties.

Stovnerhallen was stripped down for a complete renewal, and the facility had been stripped back to bare concrete when our specialists began work, followed by thorough groundwork, levelling and slope construction. This created a solid foundation for a comprehensive solution combining functionality, durability and aesthetics.

Acrylicon delivered Flake flooring, similar to those installed at Nationaltheatret railway station, as well as WallSystem and WallSystem Flake for semi-wet and wet zone areas. These pore-free and durable solutions ensure easy cleaning and long service life, even under demanding conditions.

The result was a maintenance-friendly facility that withstands both daily use and demanding activities without incurring additional costs for the municipality. The sustainable solution contributes to reduced maintenance and increased lifespan for the municipality’s properties.

A model for the future

Stovnerhallen is a clear example of how modern materials can elevate older sports facilities to today’s standards without compromising functionality or aesthetics. The upgrade was carried out with a focus on sustainability, durability and minimal maintenance costs.

The project has inspired similar solutions in the Oslo area and demonstrates how a strategic investment in quality from the start can reduce future costs. Stovnerhallen stands today as a model for sustainable building management.
