Durable solution in a historic
school building

Public Buildings

Across the country, older school buildings face the same challenge: the need for modern wall and floor coverings that meet today’s requirements for safety, indoor climate, cleaning and sustainability.

After more than 100 years of operation, Haslum school received a comprehensive upgrade of floors and walls in corridors, changing rooms, showers and toilets in 2023. The goal was to combine modern standards for functionality and hygiene with aesthetic adaptation to the school’s historic architecture. The solution resulted in durable surfaces with long service life and minimal maintenance requirements.

The Challenge: Ageing facilities and tight deadlines

Like many older school buildings, Haslum was characterised by wear, areas that were difficult to keep clean, and lack of slip resistance. Additionally, the building did not meet modern requirements for indoor climate, health and safety. The solutions from Acrylicon were certified emission-free with M1 Indoor Comfort, which is a requirement for use in schools and nurseries.

The school’s age also required that the upgrade harmonise with the building’s historic character. With the start of the school year just around the corner, it was essential to complete the work within a tight timeframe without affecting the school’s daily operations.

The Solution: Efficient installation and tailored design

Acrylicon was chosen based on Asker municipality’s experiences from similar projects, as well as recommendations from Oslo municipality. Our experienced project managers conducted thorough site surveys and planning, ensuring that the installation itself could proceed as efficiently as possible.

The work included:

  • Floors: Acrylicon Flake (152 m²)
  • Walls: Acrylicon WallSystem Flake (208 m²) and Mono-color (233 m²)

These products feature durable and pore-free surfaces that make cleaning easier, while also providing increased safety and long service life. The materials are also easy to adapt to match colours and textures of existing solutions, avoiding a “patchwork” appearance.

Finished floors were left to cure overnight, after which work on the walls could proceed. Acrylicon’s flexible system also allowed for adjustments after installation to meet the school’s specific needs.

The result is robust, slip-resistant surfaces that are easy to maintain. Since installation, there has been no need for maintenance work on the systems. At the same time, they preserve the school’s historic architectural expression, so that the upgrade combines aesthetics and functionality.

An inspiring project

Haslum school is a great example of how modern materials can effectively elevate older buildings to today’s standards without compromising either quality or aesthetics.

The work was carried out with a focus on sustainability, long service life and minimal maintenance costs. The project demonstrates how well-considered solutions can combine functionality, safety and architectural adaptation, providing valuable inspiration for other municipal buildings.
