VOC — a hidden health risk
Unlike Acrylicon’s solutions, many other seamless floors contain toxic substances. These can release gases and particles that can be harmful to both health and the environment.
VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) are chemical substances that evaporate at room temperature and can be absorbed by the body through inhalation, skin contact or ingestion.
Health and environmental challenges with epoxy and polyurethane floors
Thermoset floors such as epoxy and polyurethane contain VOCs and other problematic substances:
Epoxy contains bisphenol A (BPA), a substance listed on the Norwegian Environment Agency’s SVHC list (Substances of Very High Concern), which can be harmful to health and the environment.
Polyurethane contains isocyanates, reactive compounds that can cause respiratory problems and allergic reactions.
These toxic substances pose a risk both during installation, when the floors emit potentially harmful gases during curing, and later during use, where wear can release health-damaging particles.
The risk increases further during interventions in the floor, such as drilling, cutting or fire, as this can release hazardous substances.
